Deeley Group marks 90 years with turnover heading towards £100m
The Coventry contractor and developer says its anniversary year is among its strongest, with turnover of £67m last year rising to near £100m for 2025/26 and a £35.9m Anchor scheme delivered.
Coventry-based Deeley Group is marking 90 years since it was founded in 1936, and said turnover grew to £67m last year and is heading towards £100m for 2025/26.
The family-owned contractor and developer said it had delivered 591 homes, 478 care beds, 762 retirement living beds and 106 completed projects over the past 10 years. It marked the anniversary with two celebrations attended by staff, partners, clients and members of the Deeley family.
Peter Deeley and his daughter Eleanor Deeley are Joint Managing Directors, the second and third generations to run the business.
Peter Deeley, Joint Managing Director of Deeley Group, said: "We have always tried to be more than just a builder and to be part of the community, both where we are based and where we work, and that's still how Eleanor and I run the business together today."
The Anchor work
Deeley said that in the last year it delivered its largest value scheme to date, a £35.9m, 137-apartment retirement community for Anchor in Sutton Coldfield. The group now works across homes, commercial, education and retail development, alongside a later living division it describes as fast-growing.
The Sutton Coldfield scheme sits on the former Royal Works site on Coleshill Street and consists of one five-storey and one four-storey block, according to Anchor. Anchor announced the groundbreaking on 19 September 2024 and said at the time the scheme was expected to be completed by 2026.
It is one of two independent living schemes worth more than £55m in total that Anchor announced in March 2024 it was working on with Deeley Group. The second is a £19.6m, 80-apartment development at Silver Hill in Peterborough, which Anchor said Deeley Construction won through competitive tender. Both are being delivered with Homes England funding, Anchor said.
| Anchor scheme | Value | Apartments |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Works, Sutton Coldfield | £35.9m | 137 |
| Silver Hill, Peterborough | £19.6m | 80 |
Patrick Duffy, Anchor's Director of New Business, said in the March 2024 announcement that the two schemes underpinned Anchor's vision to deliver at least 500 new homes a year. Anchor said then that Deeley would have delivered 624 extra care apartments and 258 care home beds over the previous five years.
Nine decades in Coventry
Deeley said the business was founded by bricklayer George W. Deeley, who won his first contract to build houses in Bedworth from a yard on Avon Street in Coventry. During the Second World War it built air raid shelters, then rebuilt homes and schools across the city after the war.
Companies House records show Deeley Construction Limited was incorporated on 5 February 1948. The register lists its previous names as G.W. Deeley Limited, until 2014, and, for a period from 1978 to 1979, Deeley Construction International Limited. The holding company, Deeley Group Limited, was incorporated on 6 January 1977 and was named Deeley Construction Group Limited until 1988. Its registered office is George House, Herald Avenue, Coventry.
Among the schemes Deeley cites are the £150m regeneration of Belgrade Plaza in Coventry city centre, Central Six Retail Park and Bermuda Park in Nuneaton, where the company said a derelict former mining village has grown into about 1,000 homes and more than 2,000 jobs over five decades.
In Wyken, Coventry, the group said it has built a school, church, parish hall and affordable homes over 70 years and is on site with a further residential development.
Training and fundraising
Deeley said 25% of its current workforce came through a trainee, apprenticeship or graduate programme.
Eleanor Deeley, Joint Managing Director at Deeley Group, said: "We have transformed the business in recent years with new processes, technology and investment in training, which gives us strong foundations as we continue to grow."
The company's annual Starley Sportive charity bike ride has raised close to £90,000 for local good causes since 2013, it said, and its Gig for Good band night has raised more than £100,000 since its launch.
